From out of deepest space and via time warp from the far-flung fifties comes STRANGE WORLDS, the ultimate collection of Wallace Wood’s early, non-EC science fiction and fantasy stories.

This is not a book to introduce one’s self to Wood, arguably the greatest sci-fi illustrator of the 20^th Century. No, STRANGE WORLDS is a book for Wood fans who want the big picture. What we have here is the chance to watch the artist’s astonishingly rapid development from almost crude beginnings to his fabled mastery of storytelling, composition and shadows, all in just the few short years featured herein. Between black and white reprints and online scans, the true connoisseur has seen most of this work before but oh, to have it now in such a nice chronological presentation with lovingly restored color from the original issues of SPACE DETECTIVE, CAPTAIN SCIENCE, AMAZING ADVENTURES and other long-forgotten four-color treasures! Words fail.

To be honest, the stories themselves aren’t much, many being clichéd space opera of the most antiquated sort. But this isn’t a book about stories. It’s a book about art. Wood’s early collaborations with Joe Orlando are present as well as work done with Al Williamson, Frank Frazetta and even Jack Kirby. And every one is a revelation to Wood fans, showing off his enthusiasm for outer space stories and his experimentations as he became the genius he would so quickly become.

So exactly what is in STRANGE WORLDS? To start with, there’s THE FLYING SAUCERS, a fairly serious full-length tale exploiting UFO’s when they were in the news almost daily. Then there’s AN EARTHMAN ON VENUS, inexplicably appearing in black and white. There are a number of series entries with characters including the aforementioned Captain Science and Space Detective as well as Kenton of the Star Patrol and Rocky X of the Rocketeers. Dotted around these are one-off stories from various publishers with the book finishing up with a post-EC tale from Atlas and some beautifully colored continuity from the SKY MASTERS OF THE SPACE FORCE newspaper strip in which Wood inked Jack Kirby in what many have called the best work of either artist! In between many of the stories are original art panels and pages from some of the artist’s best-known EC classics which can be used to compare his development.

All of this is wrapped up in David Spurlock’s beautiful packaging. The front cover of the regular edition is a “new” piece of Wally Wood art produced by the great designer and artist, Jim Steranko, utilizing bits and pieces from various Wood illustrations. In this manner, Jim has created Woodwork that highlights Wood’s trademark spaceman, a sexy woman and a sleek rocket all amidst a screen-laden planetscape.

In case anyone hasn’t been paying attention, let me say it plainly—This is a gorgeous volume!

The limited slipcase edition flops the new cover to the back and spotlights on its front the amazing Wood/Adkins cover for a 1964 record album of H.G. Wells’ WAR OF THE WORLDS. It also offers an additional portfolio of the little-seen inside front cover art that Wood did for many of the Avon titles on which he worked in the 1950’s.

Wallace Wood took his own life in 1981, more than 30 years ago now. And yet 2012 looks to be Wood’s best year ever with forthcoming Wood projects from Fantagraphics and IDW (and a couple more rumored but as yet officially unannounced!). It all starts, just like Woody did, with Vanguard’s STRANGE WORLDS. You should start there, too!

Wally Wood's career in comics is legendary among the annals of comic's
history. He rocketed to fame working on Will Eisner's The Spirit
newspaper strip and became one of the most talented artists working for
EC Comics during the 1950s. Wood also became a star of EC's satire
comic, Mad, which went on to even greater success as a magazine,
allowing the artist to apply his amazing talents in a broader spectrum.
When the comic's industry fell on lean times during the mid 1950s, Wood
segued into the field of science fiction pulp illustration, providing
over 200 beautiful drawings and several color cover paintings for the
digest magazines, particularly Galaxy. Wood left behind a legacy of
great art, much of which has never been reprinted. This book will
feature them all. Long time Wally Wood historian Roger Hill has spent
the past twenty years pulling together the history of Wood's involvement
with the pulp digests and tracking down original art for this project.
Over half of the images have been pulled from the originals or from
Wood's personal file copies, allowing Wood fans the finest possible
reproduction!

Peter Hsu's Quadrant

Peter Hsu was one of the assistants who worked with Woody on the second (and possibly the unfinished third) WIZARD KING graphic novel toward the end of his life. Hsu went on to do a number of sexy sci-fi/fantasy comics including QUADRANT, seen here in its collected version. These were all distinguished by black and white painted art highlighting gorgeous Wood-like blondes, all of which had seemingly been copied from adult magazines. In fact, some of his work showed them in ridiculous poses but discretely covered up. Others, like this one, remove the obstacles. Even as he focused on naked women in high heels fighting monsters with swords, the rest of his work, as seen in the images below, always continued to show a distinct influence from his brief time with Wood. If I recall correctly, Mr. Hsu went into software design later on.

A side by side comparison shows that a number of panels on the original art pages have the relettered and pasted over dialogue but some do reveal the original. Published in beautiful color in EERIE # 60, this is one of my favorite Wood pieces (done with Paul Kirchner?). The mag does not list a writer (or an artist for that matter) but a later reprint credits Warren regular Gerry Boudreau. I've also heard it said it was Bill DuBay, who rewrote so many of Wood's later works for Warren.

The story, in this case, appears to be essentially the same so I'm not sure why someone felt the need to rewrite the piece so substantially.

DuBay would go on to become an artist, writer and eventually editor at Warren and, in spite of his here obvious appreciation of Wood, he would become a major thorn in the artist's side in his later years and the subject of rants in THE WOODWORK GAZETTE.

Seen here is WALLY WOOD'S WEIRD SEX FANTASIES PORTFOLIO published in 1977. Its oversized black and white plates feature some of Woody's best art of the period (aided by his then assistant, A.L. Sirois) and are more R-rated than X-rated for the most part.

Any serious Wood fans out there who would like a copy? It's a signed and numbered limited edition. Mine is #589/2000. Signed by Wallace Wood. It's in excellent condition with only a slight crinkle in one corner of the sleeve. These have been all over the board in recent years with at least one copy going on eBay for as much as one thousand dollars. Asking pice for this one, originally purchased by me from the publisher during Wood's lifetime, is only $300.00 plus $15.00 postage and insurance.

Dead Bode Erotica by A.L. Sirois

I spotted this fascinating page in an early issue of NATIONAL SCREW featuring Wood's MALICE IN WONDERLAND strip. Published briefly in the mid-seventies, NATIONAL SCREW, a spinoff of the newspaper SCREW, was an unusual hybrid that attempted to have cutting edge softcore porn photos alongside mainstream authors and articles and mixed with NATIONAL LAMPOON style humor.

This particular piece is clearly both an homage and a dark-humored tribute to the late artist Vaughn Bode' who had accidentally killed himself not long before. Noting that the piece was dedicated "To Woody," I then noted the signature as that of A.L. Sirois, Wood's assistant during this period whom we already know had helped out on the MALICE strip.

I contacted Al for the story behind this tasteless li'l tribute and asked if he and/or Wood were Bode' fans.

"Tasteless… yeah, well, no one is perfect. That was my first professionally published piece of comic work, and I'm sure NS published it only because I was working for Wood and they were courting him. I don't recall Woody coming down on one side or the other about Bode's work. I was a big Bode fan myself, believe it or not, but inclined to be more than a little iconoclastic in my youth. A lot of people seemed to find that piece funny. I did a number of other strips for NS, all of them pretty tasteless."

A controversial picture of our hero considering his ultimate demise, this was the "contributor" photo of Woody that appeared in the second issue of Al Goldstein's NATIONAL SCREW featuring MALICE IN WONDERLAND.

Speculation when I posted this on Facebook arose as to Wood's politics. Obviously, he collected guns. He also liked country music. Did those two things point toward his being a Republican or, as one person said, was he in spite of these bits of circumstantial evidence, a "liberal democrat, Minnesota born and bred?"

It matters not either way as we are all here for love of his his art, not his politics, but those of you who knew him, chime in. Was he a red or blue? A libertarian? An independent? Or did he just not give a damn? Just curious.

Artist Ken Landgraf is a longtime student of Wood art (see his very Wood-esque nude at right). Ken recently sent along some comparison shots to show where Wood got the inspiration for some of his now-famous DAREDEVIL panels. They aren't exactly swipes because each one is significantly different from the original panels in Burne Hogarth's TARZAN strips.

Still, remember that it was Wallace Wood who famously (infamously?) stated “Never draw what you can copy; never copy what you can trace; and never trace what you can cut out and paste up.” By the way, I just cut that out and pasted it up. Woody would have LOVED computer tech.

Wood had briefly attended Hogarth's art school in the late forties. The TARZAN artist was and still is known as a master of anatomy and his various books on same have often been used as reference by comic book artists.

Nick Cuti Art from Hitchcock

One of my favorite former Woodworkes is Nick Cuti, creator of MOONCHILD and, with Joe Staton, co-creator of E-MAN. Here's some lesser known art from Nick.

On Facebook, Rob Imes noted:For many years, the illustrations in Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine were uniformly by one (?) artist whose scratchy style emphasized story-title lettering as much as the art. That all changed with the August 1982 issue when new editor Cathleen Jordan brought in a variety of excellent artists to provide the opening illos, among them former Charlton editor-writer Nick Cuti. The Cuti art shown here is from the Jan. 1985 (left) and April 1984 issues.

Space Search Seven

Seen here is the original splash for Woody's popular but somewhat controversial Warren story, THE MANHUNTERS. The controversy lies in the fact that someone at Warren (either credited writer Gerry Boudreau or, as Wood apparently believed, editor Bill Dubay) took his original and completely rewrote every scrap of the artist's dialogue, in essence making a different story than the one originally intended.

I had some of these as a kid but, of course, had no idea that they were actually designed by Wally Wood and Basil Wolverton as Topps' 1965 UGLY STICKERS. The realized in rubber versions were, if I recall, available in gumball machines two years later as RUBBER UGLIES.
