PENCILINK takes an all-too brief look at HOUSE OF MYSTERY's period as a dollar comic and Wally Wood's MAD-like contribution to one issue here-- http://pencilink.blogspot.com/
Woody was so damn good at this. At superheroes etc. he was just a great inker and fine storyteller among others. Often stiff and detached with those frozen faces. Doesn't do it for me except in a technical sense. His humor stuff by contrast is just a knockout, he leverages a sophisticated technical polish that nobody can touch with a loose weirdness. Jesus, just look at this little throwaway composition, with the blacks framing the newspaper and the legs/walls/desk front framing the figure. Every detail is fun to look at and makes the picture easy to read.
