This piece is fantastic. All the comic strip characters are completely recognizable and almost all are on-model. This really showcases Wood's diversity as an artist. I also like the craftint tonal work. A very nice double spread.
The real-life Andy Gump was Mississippi's Andy Wheat who had his lower jaw removed because of an infection. Sidney Smith met Wheat through his brother, a dentist, as seen in these Life photos.
