Lariat Lucy

Here's a link to a full reprint of LARIAT LUCY, a 1952 Wood (with??) story from WESTERN CRIMEBUSTERS.

  1. You sure it's Wood? If you had said 1948, perhaps it might have been. But in 1952, every page was an assured knockout. So this doesn't really look like Wood to me, except superficially. The hands are really weird and un-Woodian throughout. Also some of the faces and "sky" effects and the creative layouts on page 3 (Wood had many strengths, but didn't care much about imaginative layout). Could it be Sid Check with friends?

  2. I know what you mean. I'd say it's definitely with someone (as I parenthetically hinted above)but it's in the Wood Index without any additional artist listed and I stand by the Index. A few things may be missing but what's there is trustworthy. As far as the style, it may have been done a little earlier. Woodwork is listed as being in a number of issues of that title.Anyone else wish to weigh in on this? Sid Check? Harrison? Orlando?

  3. On reflection there's that first balloon on page 8. That bold "E" in "sheriff" with the longer line in the center is typical Wood lettering. There's perhaps more of that "E" here and there, though the lettering looks really rushed and uneven. A strange-looking job, altogether!

  4. Arg! The link doesn't work! I am SO curious to see this. Please see what you might be able to do to restore the link.
    Thanks,

  5. Sorry, Link. Looks like they've taken it down completely on their end.
